From Infrastructure to Plot: Modernizing Irrigation Practices in the EU

The EU’s substantial investment in irrigation infrastructure under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has not translated into commensurate gains in water productivity at the farm level. Despite €387 billion committed under CAP 2021–2027 and decades of rural development funding for irrigation modernization, only 6% of EU farmland is irrigated, yet this land accounts for 24% of all water abstraction.

Modernization of Rice Irrigation in the Ahero Irrigation District

At Kenya's Ahero Irrigation Scheme, low irrigation efficiency increases nutrient and sediment runoff into the Lake Victoria . This raises risks of eutrophication in the lake. To enhance water management, the adoption of intermittent flooding and lining canals are practices taken into consideration. Water losses, protection of downstream water quality, and support for sustainable agriculture across the basin are some of the benefits gotten from these practices. Further several options related to the use of pressurized irrigation are explored in regards to their water use efficiency.

Rethinking the Irrigation Toolkit: When MP Rotator Nozzles Offer a Practical Alternative to Drip Systems

Micro or drip irrigation has become an important part of modern landscape design due to its discreet subsurface installation and highly targeted water delivery. However, this approach can sometimes come with distinct maintenance challenges that lead to higher long-term operating costs. At the same time, advanced overhead irrigation technology can achieve comparable or greater water savings while giving designers more options for efficient landscape irrigation across wide coverage areas.

The EIA creates an impact through its Working Groups

In order to implement its projects, the EIA is supported by a structure of 6 Working Groups (WGs). Each WG consists of a group of experts, members of the EIA, who focus on a strategic topic of interest. The objective of each WG is to promote the topic for which it is responsible. In 2021 we have 6 working groups: Sustainability in Agriculture, Urban Landscaping, Standardization, Training and theTransfer of Knowledge, Wastewater and Communication. The working groups are restricted to EIA members and each member can choose one or to participate in one or two Working Groups”
