The European Commission announced its intention to put forward a water resilience strategy (WRS) to which EIA is willing to contribute

A report on the implementation of the Water Framework Directive was published mentioned that Member States have generally improved knowledge and monitoring of surface and ground water bodies, increased spending, and improved application of EU water-related legislation, though with considerable regional differences. However, significant work is needed to meet EU targets on freshwater quality and quantity. The average health of EU surface water bodies is critical, mainly due to widespread contamination by mercury and other toxic pollutants. Water scarcity and drought are also growing concerns across most of the EU.
From this, the EU has made key recommendations to Member States to improve water management by 2027, on pollution control, on funding management frameworks, on environmental challenges, on the promotion of Wastewater Reuse.
On 6 March, the European Commission organised an event dedicated to contributing to the future European strategy on water resilience. Stakeholders and civil society were invited to this high-level event entitled ‘Towards a water resilience strategy for the European Union’
