EIA Executive Strategy Session: the Future of the Irrigation Market

EIA Executive Strategy Session Explored How Europe’s Water Transition Is Reshaping Business Opportunities

The European Irrigation Association (EIA) successfully held its Executive Strategy Session: “How Europe’s Water Transition is Reshaping Business Opportunities for the Sector,” bringing together members from across Europe for an interactive discussion on the future of the irrigation industry.

The online session focused on the major structural trends transforming Europe’s water sector and their implications for irrigation businesses. Drawing on strategic research for the Smart Market Report of the European Irrigation Market carried out in collaboration with ESCP Business School, the session examined how climate change, evolving European policies, sustainability requirements, digitalisation, and changing investment priorities are influencing the future of irrigation across agriculture, landscaping, urban water management, and industry.

Rather than presenting market statistics alone, the session encouraged participants to discuss what these developments mean for business strategy over the coming years. Topics included the growing emphasis on measurable water efficiency, the evolution of customer expectations, the increasing importance of integrated digital solutions, and the opportunities emerging from Europe’s transition towards a more resilient and sustainable water economy.

A key highlight of the event was the executive panel discussion featuring distinguished industry leaders:

  • Xavier Botrel, Western Europe Sales Manager, Rain Bird
  • Giulia Giuffrè, Head of Sustainability & Board Member, Irritec
  • Anthony Sèches, Global Senior Manager – Micro & Sprinklers Business, Rivulis
  • Bruno Perroni, Senior AgTech Manager Europe, Africa & Middle East, Lindsay Corporation

The panel shared valuable perspectives on how leading irrigation companies are adapting to new market realities, responding to regulatory developments, and integrating innovation into their long-term strategies. Discussions highlighted the growing importance of data-driven irrigation, water-use efficiency, automation, sustainability, and delivering measurable value to customers.

The session reinforced that irrigation is becoming an increasingly strategic component of Europe’s broader water resilience agenda. As policy, technology, and market expectations continue to evolve, collaboration across the sector will play a crucial role in ensuring that irrigation remains a key contributor to sustainable water management and agricultural resilience.

The European Irrigation Association would like to thank all speakers and participants for their active contribution to this valuable discussion. Through initiatives such as the Executive Strategy Session, EIA continues to provide its members with practical insights, strategic dialogue, and opportunities to anticipate the future direction of the European irrigation sector.

We look forward to welcoming our members to future EIA events as we continue working together to support innovation, sustainability, and resilient water management across Europe.

The presentation from the session will be distributed among members who attended the event. The full Smart Market Report of the European Irrigation market will be presented during the members’ exclusive annual event Irrigation Days on September 28-29 in Brussels, Belgium.
